This super red Rhone Grenache is killer whether you enjoy it on its own, or enjoy it with food. The best of them are darkly colored, boldly flavored with ripe black fruit characters and high notes of raspberry liqueur, spice, earth, and minerality. But don’t let those ripe comments fool you, the best versions of Grenache I’ve loved are perfectly balanced and irresistible from the first sip to the last.
The Groundwork 2012 Grenache is a value-priced label from Sans Liege, grown in four excellent vineyards in the south Central Coast. Groundwork can be purchased in downtown Pismo Beach, at the rocking low price of $20 for an exceptional wine. www.sansliege.com
The Tercero 2009 Grenache Ballard Canyon offers a vintage wine that’s also value-priced by my estimation at $35. I’ve always loved winemaker Larry Schafer’s Larner Vineyard Syrah, and I found this Grenache to be equally outstanding. Schaffer describes it as, “The best Grenache from this vineyard I’ve made to date!” I loved it, too. www.tercerowines.com
Either wine would be a great choice for leg of lamb, lamb chops, or a Hearst Ranch grass fed steak. Buy one for now and several for your cellar, and you’ll thank me for recommending them.
