Some Recent Favorites for Kathy’s Choice!
Whether Dan and I are at home or traveling, we always seek out the best local wines. And when we can’t find anything by the glass or bottle at decent prices, we pick wines from our own backyard on the Central Coast, which are typically (usually because the appellation isn’t Napa Valley) offered at better prices. We once found an exceptional Stolpman Vineyards (which has tasting rooms in Los Olivos and the Lompoc Ghetto) Sangiovese at Michael Mina’s steak house in the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco, that wasn’t over-priced. I took a lot of pride in hearing the sommelier say to me, “You know how to pick ‘em, don’t you?” Why, yes I do, I said with pride, even though I knew their price was low and the quality was high having tasted it just a month earlier.
Then again there have been times when we visit a top notch restaurant, such as Nobu in South Beach Miami, FL, where the prices are so outrageously marked up, we chose to have a draft instead–we called that “Sad Hour!” even though it wasn’t happy hour when we were there.
No offense to the craft brewers, we are simply wine lovers, foremost. Then again, that’s why we truly appreciate our fine American brewers who provide deeply satisfying brews, ales, and stouts that help us forget about not being able to buy decent wine at a fair price!
