A Salute with Fine Sparkling Wine to New Year’s Day 2016

Raising my Champagne wine flute in salute to you, my dear friends!

By Kathy Marcks Hardesty

Whatever you do, don’t tell me you don’t have plenty of our killer Central Coast sparkling wines chilled in the frig to toast New Year 2016 on Thursday night at midnight? Hardly unexpected, bubblies and Champagne wines were the topic of my newest column, “From the Vine,” in the Santa Maria Times today. Follow this quick link to my column to read the full wine column at http://santamariatimes.com/lifestyles/columnist/from_the_vine/from-the-vine-a-toast-to-the-new-year/article_c85a6444-a5bd-5db8-bde9-2c9fb8bed2c0.html

Coquard press

Laetitia’s unique Coquard press for making sparkling wines, the largest one in this country!

Laetitia’s Brut Rose has alway been one of my favorite sparkling wines. It’s versatile enough to sip on it’s own, and it’s fabulous with an array of foods. Laetitia’s tasting room in Arroyo Grande Valley is open daily, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Goat Bubbles by winemaker Norman Yost of Flying Goat Cellars in Lompoc tastes great with seafood dishes at Giuseppe’s Cucina Italian in Pismo Beach. In Lompoc Flying Goat Cellars is open Thursday through Monday, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Although my spotlight was on Riverbench in Santa Maria Valley and Laetitia in Arroyo Grande for their fine bubblies, there are many other wineries on the Central Coast that are offering delightful sparkling wines, in a wide range of prices. Among my favorites are the bubblies labeled Goat Bubbles, available for tasting at the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Undoubtedly, these three are my favorites on the Central Coast while admitting I haven’t tasted all of the 34 producers that now offer sparkling wines in Santa Barbara County alone!

Not only that, these three very friendly tasting rooms offer their sparkling wines when open, and Riverbench has two tasting rooms, open daily in Santa Maria Valley and in Santa Barbara. What better way to choose your celebratory wines than in a tasting room where you can taste them first to make  your choices?

At Riverbench you can get your bubblies in fun packages such as the glittery bottles pictured below in green, red, and gold. However you choose to celebrate, any one of these fine California sparkling wines will truly make it a party of good taste!

Happy New Year!

You’ll be glad you did!

And if you’re like me, you’ll want some fine Champagnes and other fine California sparkling wines on hand, too. Among my choices this year were Louis Roederer, Roederer Estate, and Piper Hiedsieck purchased at BevMo! in SLO; Gloria Ferrer, a great value at Trader Joe’s; and the Spanish Cava Rose Campo Viejo, another great value at California Fresh in Pismo Beach. And lastly, all of the above previously mentioned local sparkling wines. Don’t you just love the great wealth of artisan food and wine all around us on the Central Coast–I certainly appreciate them!

There are over 50 in SB County alone, and about 34 in SLO County!
